Introduction
Cardiff
University is one of the UK's most innovative, ambitious and successful
universities. Cardiff was ranked seventh in the most recent government assessment
of research out of 106 British universities, reflecting Cardiff's reputation
for cutting-edge development and research. This creates a stimulating environment
for study, ensuring that students have access to the latest thinking and
technology.
Whilst
dating from 1883, Cardiff University is focused on the 21st century and
has modern state-of-the art facilities. The University attracts students
from more than 100 countries and substantial research funding from the research
councils, public bodies, industry and commerce and other sources. The University's
Cathays Park campus is located in and around the impressive Portland stone
buildings, parks and tree lined avenues that form Cardiff's magnificent
Civic Centre. The majority of academic schools are located here and it has
the advantage of being only a few minutes' walk from the city centre.
The
academic schools offering healthcare courses (excluding optometry and pharmacy)
are based at the Heath Park campus. The site is also home to the University
Hospital of Wales and provides an ideal environment for teaching healthcare
professionals in a modern clinical setting.
Cardiff
is Europe's youngest capital and boasts an extensive range of cultural and

Cardiff University is ranked 7th out of 106 universities in the latest national independent assessment of research and is one of the UK's leading universities with both research and teaching independently rated as being of national and international excellence. The University has some of the UK's leading academic Schools and our size enables large Schools to be sustained in all the main subject areas. The University is part of the prestigious Russell Group, formed by the UK's top 19 research universities. In addition, 21 subject areas, one of the highest totals in the UK, were independently assessed as Excellent for teaching.
Cardiff University has one of the most up-to-date
library and computing services in the UK. The University has a high number
of resource centres, each one close to the School that it serves. Students
are able to access a large collection of computers, day and night, which
allow free access to e-mail, the internet and on-line resources.
Cardiff University guarantees a single occupancy place in university residences
to overseas students for the duration of their course, whatever the length,
as long as you apply through the normal admissions cycle and appropriate
allocations process. A wide range of residences, from traditional catered
halls to modern self-catered residences are offered.
One of the best Students' Unions in the UK, Cardiff's Union has over 100
student societies, including a number run for and by international students.
The Student Advice Centre and the Student Advisory Service are available
to help students throughout their time at university with confidential advice.
The University also operates a health service and there is a wide range
of religious organisations in and around Cardiff.
The International Development Division co-ordinates an excellent and valuable
induction programme including an airport collection service and events to
introduce students to life in Cardiff.
Cardiff is an affordable and accessible capital city and was recently independently identified as the most affordable of all the old University cities. The city offers an impressive range of leisure facilities including Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium, both major landmarks in the city centre. Cardiff also benefits from extensive parklands, a compact shopping centre and Cardiff Bay - one of Europe's most exciting waterfront developments.
