Every five to six years the UK Government organises a detailed analysis of all research conducted in British universities. This study is called the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and during the most recent RAE, Bangor proved itself to be amongst the very top institutions in the UK. Each academic department which is assessed is awarded a final rating of 1-5*, with 1 being the lowest and 5* the highest. Scores of 4 and above indicate that research activity of world-wide international excellence is being carried out. An impressive 77% of all the staff at Bangor who were assessed were placed in the top 4, 5 and 5* grades.
It is not just research which is incredibly important; outstanding teaching and academic support from professors and lecturers is a key factor if students are to succeed. The Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) is conducted on behalf of the Government to rate individual departments within universities. Once again, Bangor is proud to acknowledge the level of commitment shown by staff to ensure the delivery of top quality education. More than 50% of the departments assessed to date in the TQA have achieved the top rating of 'excellent' and the rest were found to be operating at a high standard.
The University operates an informal ‘open-door policy’ which enables students to have access to staff and professors throughout the year and encourages communication so that students feel comfortable and supported. This high level of personal contact is reflected in our student to staff ratio, which at 14:1 makes it one of the most favourable in the UK.
As a result of these systems, Bangor has been ranked the top university in the UK for the help and support provided to students by the The Times Higher Educational Supplement.
In order to build upon the achievements and reputation of the university, over £67million has been committed to strengthen our facilities and for the recruitment of new leading academic staff.
Some of the projects include;
- £10 million investment in a world class Management Development Centre.
- £5 million investment in CAST - Centre for Advanced Software Technology.
- £3.5 million investment in a major Cancer Research Centre.
- £8 million in new National Environmental Sciences Centre.
- £35 million to build state of the art accommodation for student.
The University has around 10,000 students from almost 80 different countries, resulting in a vibrant and multicultural student community.
Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much lower than in other parts of the UK. According to The Independent A-Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges, Bangor is ‘one of the cheapest places in Britain’ to be a student. As a university which places great emphasis on student support, we also offer extra help to new students by funding scholarships and bursaries worth over £2.5 million (please see the ‘Tuition Fees and Scholarships’ section below for more details). The Accommodation for Students website survey placed Bangor in the top three universities in Britain for quality of location and facilities out of 70 of the UK’s leading institutions.
Bangor has one of the lowest crime rates in the UK and whether you are a male or female student, it is safe for you to walk around the city in the day time and at night.
Everything in Bangor can be reached on foot, students do not need to purchase a car or rely on public transport. Libraries, lecture theatres, seminar rooms and other academic buildings are located near to each other and within walking distance of the city centre and accommodation.
As well as being an institution which prides itself on the quality of research and teaching on offer, we also believe in providing our students with a high level of support and guidance. Bangor has a dedicated team of individuals who are here to help you settle into life at Bangor as quickly and as smoothly as possible. The International Office team is happy to help you with any queries prior to your arrival in the UK. The International Student Welfare Adviser is able to offer you information with regards to visas and also other important issues during your time with us. The Centre for Careers and Opportunities helps students to find part time employment and also to look at the long term opportunities which are available to our graduates.
