Celebration of International Students in Wales
International students celebrated graduation days throughout Wales this summer. Hundreds of family members and friends also travelled from all over the world to witness the graduation celebrations. In addition many universities held graduation ceremonies for their worldwide
programmes overseas such as the recent UWIC graduation ceremony held in Brunei.
At a Graduation Celebration, organised by University of Wales, students from across the globe descended upon St David’s Hall in Cardiff. 800 graduates and 1700 of their guests attended the ceremony from as far afield as Singapore and Sri Lanka.
In 2009/10 Wales invested over £17m in scholarships to attract the best of international students to study in Wales. Last year there were almost 11,500 international students studying in Wales from over 120 countries including China, India, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Qatar, Libya and US. It is anticipated that next year this figure will rise to over 13,000 students.
International students in Wales graduated from a wide range of courses including Business, Engineering, Science, Computing, Medicine, Law and Creative industries at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level.
Virginia West, Director, Wales International Consortium said, “As we see every year with our alumni, these graduates will return to their countries with strong alliances already formed with Wales and many will become ambassadors leading the way for future business and educational partnerships between their countries and Wales. Wales has already established strong partnerships with the Province of Chongqing in China, India and Libya and at the core of these partnerships are graduates from Wales. We are very proud of these graduates and wish them every success in the future.”
