South Korean students enjoy best of Wales in UWIC exchange trip
The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) played host to a dozen students from South Korea during a six-week stay.
UWIC’s Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD) has arranged the exchange programme with Dong-A University in South Korea, after forming collaborative academic links with leading institutions in the country.
The visiting students, who are all studying art courses at their own university, have spent their time participating in a range of CSAD programme lectures and workshops, in Product Design, Graphic Communication, Illustration, Textile Design and Mobile Web & Game Design.
But the aim of the exchange is to primarily be a cultural experience, with several trips to important Welsh attractions such as Cardiff Castle, St Fagans, Big Pitt, the Senedd and Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.
Gareth Barham, CSAD’s International Coordinator, said: “This is an exciting opportunity which will enhance the existing relationship between UWIC and Dong-A University, in the city of Busan, South Korea. The visiting students are provoking a two way influence of ideas and creativity that is inspiring our students, making this a terrific trans-national educational experience for all concerned.”
This is the latest activity in cementing UWIC’s close relationship with Korea, as UWIC shares Memorandums of Understanding with Korea University as well as Dong-A University. Two CSAD students have secured a scholarship from the Korean Government to study at Dong-A for six months, where as well as studying in a country that is rich in design culture, they will also be teaching English to primary school pupils in the city of Busan.
For the first week they were at UWIC, the Korean students were accompanied by Dr Kim, the Dean of the school of Art & Design at Dong-A University.
