UWIC's Cardiff School of Education Celebrates Two Doctoral Successes with the University of Botswana

A long and successful partnership between the Cardiff School of Education and the University of Botswana was marked in July’s graduation ceremony.
Both Magdeline Mannathoko and Michael Gaotlhobogwe, who are lecturers at the University of Botswana, were awarded their doctorates in Education. Magdeline had previously gained her Master’s in the Cardiff School of Education and chose to return to undertake her doctorate.
Magdeline’s study examined the new Art and Design curriculum for Primary schools in Botswana, while Michael’s work was a case study of pupils’ views on Design and Technology in Junior Secondary schools there. While at UWIC, both academic associates made full use of the
opportunities for developing themselves as researchers, for example, by presenting papers at international conferences. Michael also represented Academic Associates on the School Research Degrees Committee for several years.
Dr Sian Williams, Research Degrees Programme Director, said: “Having two such experienced and well qualified teacher educators study with us has greatly enriched the cultural and intellectual environment of the School.”
On their return to Botswana, both Magdeline and Michael’s research findings will be drawn on by the government to inform curriculum and educational policy development.
Prof Janet Laugharne, Professor of Language in Education added: “The Cardiff School of Education looks forward to continuing and strengthening our links with the University of Botswana into the future via our two new Doctors of Education.”
