UWIC secures another £3m Erasmus Mundus project for internationalisationMohammed Loutfi

Funded by the EU, the €3m ‘Flow by Flow EU-Egypt Bridge Building (FFEEBB)’ fosters better understanding between the universities and facilitates the exchange of students, researchers and academic and administrative staff from EU countries and the Middle-East. The initial project facilitated the movement of 110 scholars between EU and Egypt, and has encouraged institutional cooperation among the partner institutions.

Last Week, and following from the success of the first project, UWIC secured a second project under the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Scheme to continue the FFEEBB initiative.

UWIC is the only Welsh Higher Education Institution to have been selected for such funding, and the only UK University to have been granted two EU Erasmus Mundus Action 2 projects. This new project is also led by UWIC and, in partnership with ten Higher Education institutions from Egypt and ten European universities from Spain, Sweden, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Lithuania and the Netherlands.

According to Professor Antony Chapman, Vice-Chancellor of UWIC, “Internationalisation is core to UWIC. This latest success with the FFEEBB project is not only a key part of UWIC’s Internationalisation Strategy, but it is further evidence of our growing international reputation. Such a project enables UWIC to establish and build on strong links with our international TNE partners.”

Co-ordinated by Dr Mohamed Loutfi, Dean of International Development at UWIC, the €3m funded project is key to building on the success of the initial project achievements. “We are very pleased to be the leading UK University in Erasmus Mundus programmes. Our expertise in this area is now being drawn upon by other UK HE bodies through the transfer of know-how and the sharing of our good practice,” said Dr Loutfi.

The new project involves several partners which UWIC already has strong connections with including Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Fayoum University and the Arab Academy for Science and Technology.

The Erasmus Mundus Action 2 scheme is a co-operation and mobility scheme for Higher Education which aims to enhance the political, cultural, educational and economical links between the European Union and Third-countries.
