Another Successful International Evening at Bangor University
A representation of traditional Chinese opera was the one of the many highlights of a hugely successful International Evening, held at Bangor University. Organised by the University's Student Services Centre, the evening celebrated the rich culture and diversity of the University community; providing an opportunity for students and staff to share their cultures by way of music, dance, poetry, costume and tradition.
The University currently hosts students from over 70 different countries and the Student community has many vibrant Societies reflecting the culture of different nationalities.
Having been formally welcomed by the University Academic Registrar, Dr Ioan ap Dewi, the evening began with a taste of Welsh culture, with a traditional Folk Dance display by Dawnswyr Bro Cefni. Following this, the international student community provided a varied programme of dance, poetry, music and song. There were spectacular dance performances from the Bruneian, Malaysian, Afro Caribbean, Indian and Islamic Societies. The audience heard Indian and Saudi Arabian poetry; while members of the Chinese Society sang and gave a piano solo of traditional Chinese music and members of the Japanese Society also sang.
"The event was particularly well attended this year and everyone had a really enjoyable evening. It really is a fantastic opportunity to bring so many cultures together and we must thank all the students who contributed to making the evening such a success. I would also like to thank the deputy mayor of Bangor, Councillor Jean Forsyth and councillor Doug Madge for giving up their time to be with us, and to all the University staff who attended’ said Fran Tate, Head of Student Services.
Many of the societies had stalls providing information and displays of their culture; whilst the Islamic society provided Arab coffee for all to taste.
