Cardiff University celebrates international students English language success
A group of international students who passed a key Cardiff University course designed to equip them with English language skills for their University studies have been celebrated at an official awards ceremony.
Successful students from different countries across the world, including China, completed the Universitys pre-sessional English language course and received their certificates at the Universitys Julian Hodge Lecture Theatre.
As part of the Universitys annual International Summer School, the pre-sessional courses provide students with the opportunity to gain the necessary language skills to undertake their undergraduate or postgraduate studies. This summer, 246 students joined the courses.
Two Chinese students, who received their certificates and will continue their studies at the Universitys School of Business, have praised the course as key to improving their language skills.
Twenty-year-old Lin Bai from Beijing, who will now study for an MSc in International Management at Cardiff University, said: I chose to study at Cardiff because the School has such an excellent reputation - the pre-sessional course has helped me progress in my English, both listening and speaking.
The same is also true of fellow Business student, Xiaohu Sun. The 24-year-old from Shanghai who is set to study for an Msc in International Transportation, said: The pre-sessional course has helped me to have more confidence in English as well as improving my skills in making presentations and essay writing.
Cardiff University has a long tradition of welcoming international students. With more than 3000 international students currently studying at Cardiff, representing over 100 countries, the University has a unique multi-cultural environment.
As part of the Universitys growing reputation for attracting and supporting students from all parts of the world, the University has signed a number of key agreements with international Universities.
The University recently hosted a visit from senior officials from the Beijings Capital Medical University (CMU) to discuss the possibility of greater opportunities for collaboration - including a possible summer school, as well as signing a unique agreement offering some of Indias most talented journalism students the chance to further develop their skills at the University.
The pre-sessional course is designed to provide international students with an opportunity to sample and adapt to university life, as well as adjust to life in a new country.
Twenty-three year-old Xuan Zheng, from Shanghai, who will now study for a MA in International journalism said: The Masters course in Journalism at Cardiff is one of the top three in the UK.
This course has provided me with great preparation for my future studies as well as helping me to adapt to the new culture and help me settle in to a new country.
All of the successful international students will now go on to continue their undergraduate and postgraduate studies in variety of different subjects in all parts of the University including planning, engineering, journalism, maths and medicine.
