Wales honoured with statue of Confucius

Professor Richard Davies

The Confucius statue generously donated by the European Federation of Chinese Organisations to the people of Swansea was officially unveiled at Swansea University’s Singleton Park campus on September 15th.

The hand carved stone statue of the Chinese philosopher, Confucius, is the first in Wales and the third in the UK.

Mr Tian Xiaogang, Minister Counsellor of Education Affairs for the Chinese Embassy, said: “It is a pleasure to visit Swansea and to have the opportunity to unveil the impressive statue of Confucius - a symbol of China and Chinese culture.

“The gift recognises the success of the deep and strengthening links between academic institutions, businesses and government organisations and further demonstrates the continuing growth of successful relationships between China and Wales.”

Situated in a peaceful courtyard in Swansea University’s Singleton Park campus, the statue will be unveiled in a traditional Chinese-style ceremony; with Chinese Unicorn dancers and a drummer leading guests on a procession towards the statue.

Andrew Davies, Assembly Member for Swansea West and Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery in the Welsh Assembly Government, said: “I’m delighted that the European Federation of Chinese Organisations has selected Swansea as the first vibrant and multi-cultural city in Wales to receive a statue of the Chinese philosopher, Confucius.”

“The planned celebrations will demonstrate that local and regional partners - such as Swansea University, businesses and community groups - are working closely with the Chinese Embassy, the Welsh Assembly Government and other public sector bodies, to support Wales’s strategic internationalisation agenda.”

Swansea University has a long history of working with China and values its’ partnerships with both academia and industry. By way of example, the University works closely on major research projects with over 200 business partners worldwide, including Huawei - the Chinese telecommunications giant. Through the application of this research expertise, the University helps industry to address issues and challenges on a day-to-day basis; helping to convert innovative ideas into commercial solutions that contribute positively towards the further development of a knowledge economy for Wales and further afield.

The University also has well established academic agreements with higher education institutions in many countries worldwide; including highly regarded (211 and 985 status) universities in China. These links deliver benefits to staff and students; helping to foster a research culture that allows knowledge transfer and mutual understanding to flourish.Professor Richard Davies

Speaking on behalf of the European Federation of Chinese Organisations, Mrs Wai-Fong Lee, Chair of the Swansea Chinese Community Cooperative Association explained: “Confucius was a politician, a thinker and a great educator who is often referred to as a ‘role model for teachers through the ages’ and ‘the greatest sage’.

“It is therefore appropriate that his statue should be hosted at Swansea University - which has a long and rich history of welcoming both academics and students from across China; providing excellent opportunities to undertake joint research projects, share knowledge and gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of differing cultures.”

The traditional ribbon flower cutting ceremony, including a simulation of fire crackers, will take place following the speeches. The Chinese Unicorn dancers will then lead the invited guests and onlookers across the University’s campus to the Abbey Building. The dances of the prancing Unicorn will be both boisterous and loud, providing an entertaining, colourful and energetic display. The dance will be performed outdoors by a group of ten athletes dressed in fabulous costumes.

Professor Richard B Davies, Vice Chancellor of Swansea University, concluded: “I am honoured to accept the statue of Confucius on behalf of Swansea University and the people of this vibrant and multicultural city and region.

”By unveiling the statue, we celebrate the firm friendships and close ties that we have with China and reaffirm Swansea University’s commitment to continue to work in partnership with government, business, academia and the local community for all our benefit.”
