Academic Takes a Lead Role in Performance Journals

A Swansea Metropolitan University performing arts lecturer has become a leading figure in the publication of two high profile performance-related journals.

Dr Kene Igweonu, a lecturer at the Centre for Performance and Literature at Swansea Met for the past two years, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of African Performance Review (APR) as Assistant Editor.

APR is the triennial, rigorously peer-reviewed journal of the African Theatre Association (AfTA) which is dedicated to publishing, disseminating and encouraging high quality research and information on theatres and performances in Africa and the African Diaspora. The journal is published in the UK by Adonis and Abbey Publisher Ltd.

Dr Igweonu’s appointment is recognition of his many contributions to African theatre and performance research. He also convenes the African Theatre and Performance working group of the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR).

About his appointment, Dr Igweonu, originally from Nigeria, said: “The content of the publication is very specific as it is all about African Theatre. In my new capacity I hope to contribute my experience and enthusiasm to the continued development and publication of African Performance Reviewin years to come.”

Dr Igweonu is also the Editor of Swansea Met’s new eJournal, Perfformio, which has already received high praise from the academic community. Perfformio is an international online journal of the performing arts and is published twice every year, aiming to provide a credible platform for the dissemination of high quality research by academics and practitioners in performing arts and allied disciplines.

He added: “Unlike APR, the market for Perfformio is quite general as its content is varied. Ironically, the first issue focuses on African theatre while the next issue, out in December, will look at physical theatre and somatic studies. It is aimed at students, academics and people with a general interest in performing arts.”
