Swansea lecturer joins National Writers’ Centre for Wales Board
Playwright D.J.Britton, who lectures in Creative Writing at Swansea University, has been appointed to the Board of the National Writers' Centre for Wales, as artistic adviser.
The announcement comes as Britton's own dramatic work is about to feature in two major new Welsh theatre productions.
The National Writers' Centre for Wales is based in Tŷ Newydd, Llanystumdwy, Gwynedd, home of the great Welsh Statesman David Lloyd George. It promotes and develops literary writing in English and Welsh through residencies and short courses.
Tŷ Newydd was refurbished and expanded in 2006 and this year features visiting artists ranging from Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy to novelist Niall Griffiths.
Britton is highly enthusiastic about the Centre’s contribution to the arts in Wales. He said: "Tŷ Newydd is a gem of Welsh culture. It is there we see the development of writing in Wales taking shape before our eyes."
Meanwhile his own work is about to go on show at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff, where his new version of the Theban plays, Oedipus/Antigone, opens in an adventurous promenade performance on February 22.
D.J. Britton is also working as dramaturg on Shelf Life the second production in the premiere season of the new National Theatre of Wales.
Shelf Life, an inventive site-specific presentation by Volcano Theatre and the Welsh National Opera, takes over the Old Library in Swansea in April.
