Bangor University

an alumni perspective by Hongbo Hei LLM Commercial Law, Bangor Law SchoolHongbo Hei

After completing an LLM in Commercial Law at Bangor Law School in 2008, Hongbo Hei returned to China to prepare for the Chinese National Judicial Examination.  He is now a fully qualified Chinese Lawyer and works for a major International firm based in China.
“After graduating from Shandong University with Law and English double bachelor degrees, I went to Bangor Law School to further my LLM in Commercial Law in September 2008.

After completing my course in Bangor, I returned to China in July in 2009 and prepared for the Chinese National Judicial Examination in September as well as the master dissertation. My schedule was really very tight but I did not waste a minute. Within almost three months of intense preparations, I successfully passed the exam in November, which means that I am qualified to be a Chinese lawyer, and then I started to write the dissertation straight away. Since I had prepared a draft and collected all the materials that I needed in Bangor, the process of writing was very smooth. After submitting the dissertation in December, I started to look for a job.

The job market is extremely competitive but the Bangor LLM background really gave me a sharp edge. I got several offers and finally chose Mayer Brown JSM at its Guangzhou office in China. To work in an international law firm has been my dream since I started to study law. Mayer Brown JSM is a reputable international law firm combined between Mayer Brown in America and JSM in Hong Kong. Even before the merger, both of the firms had established international reputation in their long history.

I am so grateful for everything that Bangor and the Law School have offered me. At Bangor, I enjoyed one of the most wonderful experiences in my life and I have known the most sincere and helpful friends and lecturers that I have ever met. Without their help and knowledge, I would not have achieved all this.”
