Swansea University

Yuen Leng Chin (Malaysia), BSc Actuarial Studies
Yuen Leng Chin
What do you like about Swansea?
It’s the second largest city in Wales and a great place to study. It’s peaceful, there’s serene countryside, it’s cheap and the people are really nice. Swansea is compact and has everything you need; you can just walk everywhere and not wait for a bus.

Have you done any work placements?
I’m doing a summer placement at Deloitte in London for two months and taking a year out from my course to do a placement in risk analysis at HBOS in Cardiff. I applied online and did some online tests and interviews. The Careers Advisory Service provided me with examples of online testing and checked my CV, which was very useful.

Where are you living?
I’m staying in the Student Village and definitely enjoying the experience. Not only do you
make friends with people from your own country but also people from other countries;
the UK, Jordan, China, Egypt, all over! So you learn about other cultures and when I travel I have people to stay with!

Are you a member of any societies?
I’m President of the Malaysian Society, which aims to bring all Malaysians at the University together and promote our culture to everyone. We recently had a Malaysian night, to which the Vice-Chancellor came as well as a Malaysian Embassy representative, and it went very well.

What is your best memory of your time at Swansea?

It was going to a local house to have dinner, arranged by volunteers at one of the local
churches that has an international group. We had a typical English dinner and played games. It was really good trying traditional food. It was interesting to see things that we don’t have in Malaysia.
