University of Wales Lampeter
Nasir Abubukar (Nigeria) Management and IT
I chose to study in Wales because this is a University with students from all walks of life… and international representation. In Africa, specifically Nigeria which produces one of the highest numbers of graduates in the continent, there is great emphasis on those who graduate from Universities abroad, especially the UK. This is a massive opportunity for me, I’m simply proud to be amongst the luckiest ones to study here. The difference is clear; it could be felt from all angles of academic involvements. I prefer to study in a University that enables me to exploit my natural abilities and enables my tutors get the best out of me.
I chose Lampeter after I visited the University myself, attended a seminar and stayed in Lampeter for a month. During this brief stay, I found out this is the most peaceful place.
It also has some of the cheapest accommodation in any UK university to date should you decide to live on or off campus. Also it has friendly and responsive lecturers, they are always helpful due to the moderate size of classes.
In my spare time in Lampeter I work part-time. A student can easily find the right place relevant to his chosen discipline to work. Lampeter is a place of opportunities. Apart from that, I enjoy watching and playing football and play for the University’s main team. As President of African Students’ Society, we do gather occasionally to gig with colleagues.
I have visited other parts of Wales, nice places like Aberystwyth beach, Cardigan, Newcastle Emlyn, the Millennium stadium in Cardiff, Swansea University, Carmarthen, and the historical Strata Florida Abbey amongst others. Beyond Wales, I have been to Liverpool, London, Paris, and Brussels, Amsterdam and New York, all for Microsoft and other related events just for being an IT student in Lampeter. What more can a student ask for? I absolutely have no regrets whatsoever by choosing to come to the UK, Wales or Lampeter! It opened doors for me.
The best thing about living in Wales is the very friendly nature of the society. They really like people and are always proud of themselves
Studying in Lampeter has taught me how to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. I used to be a regular contributing writer with a local newspaper ‘The Path’ back in Sokoto Nigeria, a part time lecturer to a privately owned academy ‘Netcom’ and have a considerable number of high level and professional qualifications. Immediately after I started my studies, I realised I have been making series of mistakes and had so much to learn.
Though I missed my family, Lampeter is on of the most beautiful places I have ever lived in my life. I am now looking into possibly pursuing my postgraduate studies up to a doctoral level in Lampeter.
