The international student population at Glyndwr University has seen rapid growth in recent times. On-campus numbers increased by 74% this academic year over the previous year and the campus is bursting with students from Asia, Africa and America ensuring a truly multicultural experience for all. Is this increase in numbers purely coincidence in-line with a trend across Wales, or are there specific reasons why Glyndwr’s international student population in particular is growing at such a rapid rate. A recent Glyndwr MBA graduate, and now a Glyndwr PhD student, Mr Akashdeep Sasaru, gives us his thoughts on life at Glyndwr University and tells us why he thinks Glyndwr University’s international student population is increasing so dramatically.
“Glyndwr University is located in the centre of Wrexham which is often referred to as the capital of North Wales. The modern town of Wrexham is nestled in the lower Dee Valley between the lush English Cheshire plains and the Welsh hills and is surrounded by stunning panoramas and glorious countryside. Wrexham in the 21st Century has a modern town centre with an industrial estate and technology park nearby, where international companies provide services and employment.
The vibrant town centre combines older traditional shops with famous high street names, ensuring that all shopping tastes are catered for. In addition there are exciting new developments, including two new shopping centres with big name stores currently under construction. Wrexham’s central location and its excellent access to the UK’s road and rail networks make it an ideal place to study. Wrexham is only one hour’s drive from Manchester, 45 minutes drive from Liverpool and 15 minutes drive from the historic City of Chester.
As a full member of the University of Wales, Glyndwr University is rapidly developing into the major provider of university education in North Wales. Tracing its origins back to 1887, Glyndwr University is a student centred organisation providing high quality teaching. At present over 6,000 students attend Glyndwr University, with international student numbers tripling in recent years and new programmes being introduced, now is an ideal time to enrol. Also, over the next three years Glyndwr University is spending a minimum of £5.3 million improving facilities for students. Glyndwr University ’s academic areas include Business, Humanities, Science, Technology, Engineering and Art & Design. All academic areas offer undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research degrees.
Programmes are industry relevant and Glyndwr graduates have an excellent employability record. In 2004, six months after leaving Glyndwr, over 90 per cent of graduates who were available for work had gone on to a career or further study. Of those, 77 per cent went into managerial or professional roles. When I leave Glyndwr and delve in to the employment sector I am positive that my qualifications and experience gained here at Glyndwr will be of extreme benefit to me.
FACILITIES
Glyndwr students benefit from a range of world-class facilities. The Library Service has all the facilities you would expect and more besides including journals, books and internet. Another extremely attractive reason for choosing Glyndwr is the guarantee that all international students are entitled to accommodation in a Glyndwr owned hall of residence for at least the first year of your studies. We also take your security and well-being very seriously as all accommodation has 24-hour security and a comprehensive CCTV network.
The campus has over 70 lecture theatres, seminar rooms and conference suites with a wide range of workshops and laboratories. The Careers Centre at Glyndwr offers a range of services, guidance and information for students, graduates and employers and is popular with our international students.
The International Student Welfare team provides support for all international students throughout their stay in Wrexham. Social events are offered to help students become familiar with their new surroundings, this also gives students the opportunity to make new friends.
Keeping fit and healthy at Glyndwr could not be easier with Glyndwr’s excellent sporting facilities. Facilities include badminton, netball, basketball, volleyball, international hockey, football and a state-of the-art gymnasium. I play cricket quite often and visit the gym three times each week. The International Student Society represents Glyndwr’s international students’ interests. As well as providing advice and guidance on a range of issues, the ISA arranges a programme.
Glyndwr also offers one of the best scholarship packages available at any University or Higher Education Institute in the UK. I would not have been able to afford to study in the UK if it were not for Glyndwr’s scholarship package. It allows those students with the intellectual ability, but who may not have the financial capacity, to study a top class degree at a reasonable price. In a recent internal questionnaire, 94% of present international students would recommend Glyndwr to friends or family *. This statistic speaks for itself I’m sure you will agree.”
