Swansea Metropolitan University

Sam Chowdury (Bangladesh) Beng Computer Systems and Electronic Engineering

I am delighted to be studying at Swansea Metropolitan University, because of its unrivalled reputation in Engineering, Computational and Numerical modelling. All the lecturers and academic staff are very friendly and they always support the students so that they can get the best results possible.

The English language support tutor always helps international students to improve their English language, via general classes as well as in customised 1-1 sessions. He also provides study skills support to help students with things such as essay structure, referencing and critical thinking. When I first arrived in the UK it was quite difficult to understand the educational system. However, within one month this problem was solved via study skills support.

As well as English language support and Study Skills support, Student Services also provides excellent careers guidance, counselling and learning difficulties support, e.g. for students with dyslexia. There is also a nurse that provides on-site medical support to all students.

After completing my National Diploma at Pembrokeshire College, I decided to study in Swansea. The decision did not take long and was indeed the right one. What could be more inviting than studying at a location which overlooks the world famous Swansea Bay? In fact, the legendary poet, Dylan Thomas, once studied here when it was the location of Swansea Grammar School.

Swansea Metropolitan University is really an eye-opener to the beauty of Wales and a window to the world on the excellence of British higher education. I have never felt more at home than I am here at the Institute. Not only is there excellent academic support, but also on the social side it is second to none. There are around 40 different clubs to join and, more importantly, there is a strong international student committee which is run by the student union. Twice a month all the international students get together for social networking. Also, the committee arranges city tours, sports events, international movie nights, food nights, and there is a national festival for international students.

I mentioned earlier that Swansea Metropolitan University overlooks Swansea Bay. Indeed, Swansea Bay in turn gives way to the famous Gower Peninsula. This was the very first place in the UK to be named an area of outstanding natural beauty. With around 50 fabulous beaches, including Langland Bay, Caswell Bay and the stunning Rhosilli as neighbours, all students are very lucky to be studying in such a special environment. In fact, I often sit in lectures with a cup of coffee in hand and glance out of the window at this enchanting backdrop.
