Oman National Day Celebration at UWIC
UWIC is dedicated to maintaining links with international alumni, evidenced by the numerous events arranged for UWIC alumni both in Cardiff and internationally.
An example of this commitment was the spectacular Oman National Day celebration which was hosted in the National Indoor Athletics Centre at UWICs Cyncoed campus. The event was attended by approximately 600 students and their families, both UWIC students past and present, as well as those from many other British universities.
Guests of honour included Brigadier Ali Al-Abri, Defence Attaché from the Oman Embassy in London
and Professor Antony Chapman, Vice Chancellor of UWIC. The event was also attended by members of the Oman Embassy including the Health, Cultural, Education and Information Attachés and the Deputy Ambassador, along with John Phillips, Dean of International Affairs at UWIC and other members of the International Office.
The day focused on showcasing traditional Omani culture with highlights including a fashion show, a poetry recital by 11 year old Fatima Al-Muharrami, dance performances and presentations to graduating students. Guests were also served a delicious traditional Omani meal.
The event, which demonstrates the large Omani presence in Cardiff as well as the strength of the Omani Society at UWIC, was organised by members of the Omani society, including society President Khalid Al Muharrami, along with Louise MacPhail from the UWIC International Office.
UWIC plans to host a number of alumni events during the Education UK Exhibition in Oman in April 2008 as well as supporting the Omani Society in its activities for students past and present including the annual Culture Exhibition and Eid celebration party.
