Bangor University, A student perspective from Yusi Liu (China) Bsc Psychology
When I was 18 I decided to come to the UK to study by myself. At that time I was young and didn’t have any experience of being away from home so my family and I wanted to make sure I went to a relatively safe place. I found on the internet that Bangor was quite a small University city with less than 14,000 people and has a low crime rate compared to other University cities.
Bangor is a pretty place, near the sea and is surrounded by mountains. I decided to come to Bangor in March as I wanted to study the English Language and British Culture before my course started in September. At that time, I found that there was a suitable language course run by ELCOS (English Language Centre for Overseas Students) available at Bangor.
I really liked the environment, friendly people, brilliant English tutors and excellent Psychology at Bangor and that is why I’m still here 3 years later.
Although Bangor is quite a small city I found life to be very colourful, enjoyable and exciting and the people here are very friendly. I have made many friends here in Bangor, both local and international students. Since arriving here I’ve joined various clubs and societies, done a lot of volunteering work, attended various international events and been involved with the Rotary Club here as well as having a number of part-time jobs.
I’m amazed that this small and quite city could mean so much to me. I am so glad I chose Bangor.
I was named the International Student of the Year Wales 2007 and I was delighted. I entered the award because I have a colourful and enjoyable life in the UK and I wanted to share my story.
After I graduate at Bangor I hope to go to Australia to represent Wales and China as a Rotary Ambassador of Good Will. During the two years (2008-2010), I will study a Masters course as well as give cultural presentations and serve the community with the local Rotary Club. I’m looking forward to my ambassadorial role and studying in a different environment.
