St Davids Day
St Davids Day is celebrated in Wales on 1st March in honour of St David or Dewi Sant, the patron saint of Wales. St David was a Celtic monk who lived in the sixth century though much of his life was not recorded until later.
He was the Archbishop of Wales and was one of the early saints who helped to spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of western Britain.
The most well known story of St David's life is said to have taken place at the Synod of Llandewi Brefi were they were to decide whether he should be Archbishop. As he stood up to speak someone in the congregration shouted that they couldn't see him and at that point, the ground rose until everyone could see or hear Dewi Sant.
Traditionally the day is celebrated in many ways such as wearing Welsh costumes, dancing and singing folk songs, eating a bowl of Welsh soup called cawl, and reciting Welsh poems.
